Global Compact Network India has provided for robust and decentralised system of governance, whereby it facilitates the launch and operation of local chapters in key Indian cities. These chapters have been initiated by a strategic decision by the GCNI to increase its reach to companies and organisation in India.
The successful launch of the eight chapters mark the expansion and extension of the Global Compact Movement in India and scaling up of the efforts to bring together the organisations, companies and corporate on a platform to facilitate mutual sharing and learning.

The Mumbai local chapter was the first chapter that was launched in July 2009 and marked the first step towards taking the Global Compact Movement across the nation and making it a pan India movement.
The Mumbai chapter was followed by the launch of the Hyderabad chapter in July 2010 at a meeting hosted by Mr. Rana Som, CMD, NMDC.
The Chennai local chapter was launched in Chennai on 8th December, 2012 at the Service and Research Institute on Family and Children (SERFAC) campus in Chennai. The launch event included the presence of Dr. Catherine Bernard, Founder Director of SERFAC, Prof J. Phillip, President Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship, Bangalore, Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI. As an eminent GCNI member, Mr. Naresh Kumar Pinisetti, Director and Regional Head of HR Asia Pacific Region, People & Culture, VESTAS who was also present in the event is heading GCNI Chennai Chapter.
The Kolkata chapter, the fourth local chapter of the GCNI was launched on 11 March 2013 on the occasion of the 8th National Convention. The chapter marked the initiation of GCNI’s outreach towards the Eastern Region of the Indian sub - continent. The chapter was launched by Dr. Swaroop Rawal, Educational and Social Activist, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, DG and CEO, IICA, Dr. Uddesh Kohli, Senior Adviser, UNGC and Executive Member GCNI, Mr. R. Mohan Das, Director, HR and IR, Coal India Limited and Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, Executive Director, GCNI.
On 2nd April 2013, the Bangalore chapter was launched in Bangalore by Mr. Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys Limited along with Mr. Salil Tripathi, IHRB, Mr. Mark Hodge, GBI, Prof. J. Philip, XIME, Prof. C Raj Kumar, O.P Jindal Global University, Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Infosys Limited, Ms. Sushma Kapoor, UN Women and Mr. Pooran Chandra Pandey, GCNI. The launched document was also signed by CMDs/CEOs and Senior Managerial Personnel from reputed corporates, business houses and academic institutes.
On 27th February 2015 GCNI launched its 6th Local chapter in Pune. The chapter was launched by Parag Satpute, Country Manager, Sandvik Asia Pvt. Limited.
On 18th December 2015, GCNI launched its 7th Local chapter in Assam. Global Compact Network India has provided support to Government of Assam (GoA) through in-depth global knowledge inputs & dissemination, and capacity building support, involving UN-GCNI’s institutions and experts world-wide to optimise outcomes for advancing SDGs in the State of Assam.
On 19th January 2016, GCNI launched its 8th Local chapter in Kerala. The initiative is to encourage businesses, civil society organisations to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies. The local chapter of UNGC at Kerala was aligned with the Kerala perspective Plan 2030.
